I'd been to La Rochelle about 20 years ago for work and had little opportunity to do the tourist thing. A beautiful town, excellent market and shops and great dining. Go for it if those things float your boat.

Beautiful place to visit. Plenty to see and do.
Beautiful place to visit. Plenty to see and do. Great choice of restaurants.
Easy to get around; if you arrive by car, leave it parked up because everywhere in La Rochelle is mostly walkable. Use the bus to get to La Pallice (for the WWII sub base) and the Île de Ré etc. and take the local or TGV trains from the La Rochelle central station to get further afield.

Not much to add to what I have put in my property review.
Not much to add to what I have put in my property review. La Rochelle is a picturesque old sea port with a lot of history (a main reason for visiting was to research for a novel I am writing about the Huguenots-this city played a major part in the 16th and 17th century French wars of religion) great architecture, outstanding fresh food market speciality sea food. The salt water aquarium is world class, much better than the one in the Berlin zoo which I saw last year.
UK fights to the small local airport are from Stansted only, I think (check). Easy access by train from Paris or Nantes. I would think carefully about driving here as parking is VERY restricted in the old town but there are no doubt possibilities if you are staying further out, and the buses are very good.
Great place, I hope to visit again.

I visited the museums, Le Bunker, the open market, the aquarium and walked for miles. i went on a guided tour of the city which was very interesting. I ate in various restaurants and all the meals were excellent as was the service. I found the locals very friendly and helpful, even directing me back to the hotel when I was lost. It was a fabulous place to explore with lots of places to see and go. The people in the tourist office are very knowledgeable and helpful.
Although a bit tatty in term of deco, it was clean and comfortable. Basic, as you would expect from a 2 star hotel in France. I had a room with an amazing view onto the old port, which can be quite noisy at night but the double glazed windows did a good job. Perfectly fine for a short break in La Rochelle. Ah, also the 7 euros breakfast consisting of hot drink, croissant, slice of fresh bread and butter and orange juice is fairly priced. You can have your breakfast on the terrace on the pavement outside the hotel and take in the views.
Chosen as a pet friendly hotel and right in the heart of the city, this hotel exceeded our expectations with its epic balcony view. We made sure we went for the harbour view as the river view wasn't great. The lady at the reception was very nice and made our dog feel welcome. We didnt go for the breakfast as was too near the city so wanted to explore. There are street parties below that go late into the night but they have done there best with a double door feature to dull the sound. Parking was 5 minutes away and cost me €5
Staff very welcoming, professional, efficient and knowledgeable. A rare thing these days!!!
Hotel is beautifully decorated, everything new and clean. All facilities work well; shower for example is great!
Tea & coffee making machine was very welcome too; a real treat!
Breakfast great!! Mike’s better than all the other hotels we stayed at during our 2 weeks car tour of France!
Very well done Hotel St Nicolas! We will be back for sure 👍
Everybody was very friendly and welcoming. The room was very nice and breakfast on the terrace was personally prepared each morning - a lovely start to the day. This is a Bed & Breakfast property, so we were conscious that we were staying in somebody's house, but it was very spacious and provided an excellent base for our trip to La Rochelle. We would be very happy to choose this accommodation again if we should ever return to the area.
It was very clean, comfortable bed. The reception desk staff was really helpful in helping us getting around. The location is not necessary central, but it's on a fair walking distance from Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, the Old Port and towers of La Rochelle (around 1 km). I highly recommend to visit "Le France 1 - Bar de la mer" ship, nowadays converted in a floating restaurant, which is less than 300 m from the hotel.
This historic hotel is incredible with excellent staff. Situated just off the main harbour but far enough that you have peace and quiet, absolutely ideal location within walking distance of everywhere you could wish to go in La Rochelle. The interior is beautiful and the rooms are a great size overlooking the courtyard, we will definitely return, very highly recommended.
Great little hotel on our road trip through France. Half an hours walk from La Rochelle old town along the sea in a suburban neighbourhood so best of both worlds. Basic but perfect with sea views, a terrace and underground parking. Full of all nationalities, walkers, cyclists, tourists. We had a room with a balcony which would have been lovely in the sun.
Staff was very helpful. We were there on Ascension weekend, which was very crowded, and staff gave us great suggestions for avoiding crowds and having a great visit. Wonderful breakfast. Lovely chocolates in our room. Great room. Public parking behind hotel was convenient and safe. Hotel location made access to everything easy.
Beautiful period property with interesting history, an oasis of tranquility in the midst of the hustle and bustle of La Rochelle. Jean Fossati, front of house staff was exceptional, he was always polite, attentive and extremely helpful, he made the hotel feel five star. Superb breakfast quality and selection.
Nice modern hotel in the center of La Rochelle. Excellent breakfast and friendly personell. We felt very welcome. We especially enjoyed the view at the marina in front of the hotel. Also to mention that they have charging stations for electric cars.
Wonderful peaceful hotel right in the heart of beautiful La Rochelle. Staff could not have been more helpful. The family suite easily accommodated us, with a little terrace overlooking the pool (which is small but warm and perfect for kids).
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was perfect. The appartement,thé location and definitely the staff were fantastic.Overall if you would like to stay in La Rochelle then I would highly recommend this hotel.
We loved our hotel room which was large and stylish as was the hotel overall. We had a lovely pizza in the hotel restaurant in the evening and all of the staff were extremely friendly and spoke excellent English
The best setup for an apartment we’ve experienced…..having been here already for 4 weeks in France, another 8 weeks ahead, it was exceptional. Quality bath towels were a bonus after 4 weeks traveling.
Modern hotel in good location close to sailing harbor. Very comfortable bed. Very good breakfast. Several restaurants / bars close by. Free public parking near to hotel.
